Impact Stories

BRADY KNOTT is from Curve Lake First Nation in Ontario and completed her secondary education at Lakefield District Secondary School. After graduation, Brady was interested in pursuing remote opportunities involving web development and coding. Faced with a scarcity of tech opportunities in her community, Brady's friend introduced her to a Facebook post discussing the Indigenous Friends Association’s (IFA) Mentorship Program, IndigiTECH. Excited by the program offerings and its remote learning capabilities, Brady signed up.

Through Phase 1 of IndigiTECH, Brady honed her web development skills, delving into coding, UX design, and digital art.  She fondly remembers collaborating on a group project where she engaged with Indigenous artists to gather feedback, culminating in the creation of an artwork website. Utilizing the collaborative web app Figma, Brady would help design various logos and digital artworks for the website. The application not only facilitated this creative process but also enabled Brady and her team to construct UX interfaces for both the website and mock applications. Additionally, through courses and Lighthouse modules, Brady explored front-end and back-end coding development, immersing herself in programming languages such as CSS, HTML, and Javascript.

A memorable experience for Brady during IndigiTECH was her engagement with the Wavemakers virtual reality platform. Brady explored a digital campus using her avatar within this innovative virtual learning environment. The digital space featured a campfire zone where sharing circles, storytelling sessions, and networking activities were facilitated among both students and mentors. Brady was particularly impressed by the opportunity to attend a virtual job fair in Wavemakers, where she was introduced to potential employers.

After finishing Phase 1, Brady began a full-time paid internship at PointClickCare in the role of UX Designer. In this capacity, Brady actively used Figma to craft diverse design projects for PointClickCare, including a revamped design for the organization’s time picker. Brady not only deepened her proficiency in Figma but also expanded her knowledge by delving into various component properties within the platform. This valuable internship experience helped Brady realize her desire to pursue a career in UX/UI Design.

Presently, Brady is collaborating with York University on a project to craft a fresh logo design. She remains committed to expanding her proficiency in design applications, currently using Blender, a 3D Computer Graphics Software, for the logo creation. Brady's passion lies in advancing her design abilities, as she remains keen on exploring and honing her UX/UI Design skills to pursue a full-time career in the field.
