Departure of Executive Director Alejandro Mayoral Baños and Appointment of Interim Executive Director

It is with mixed emotions that the Indigenous Friends Association (IFA) announces the departure of our esteemed Executive Director, Alejandro Mayoral Baños. Alejandro has accepted the position of Executive Director at Access Now, a global organization dedicated to defending and extending digital rights. He will officially join Access Now on October 1, 2024.

Alejandro Mayoral Baños has been a beacon of dedication and passion for the Indigenous Friends Association. Over the years, his tireless work and unwavering commitment have significantly advanced our mission of bridging Indigenous Peoples with digital technologies. Under his leadership, IFA has grown in scope and impact, advocating for better representation and inclusion of Indigenous communities in the digital sphere.

Throughout his tenure, Alejandro has spearheaded numerous initiatives, including the development of the Indigenous Tech Circle and the founding of Magtayaní. His visionary leadership has been instrumental in driving forward our goals and ensuring that Indigenous voices are heard and respected in the technology sector. His academic background, with degrees in Computer Science, Interdisciplinary Studies, and a Ph.D. in Communication and Culture, combined with his lived experience, has uniquely positioned him to lead and inspire.

Alejandro’s efforts have not gone unnoticed, earning him the Ashoka Fellowship in 2023 for his exceptional work in advocating for Indigenous Peoples in digital technologies. His contributions have left an indelible mark on our organization and the communities we serve.

We are incredibly grateful for Alejandro's years of hard work, dedication, and the positive change he has fostered at IFA. While we are sad to see him go, we are also excited to see him take on this new challenge and continue his advocacy on a global stage.

In light of Alejandro’s departure, we are pleased to announce that Keshav Kant, our operations manager, will be appointed interim executive director. Keshav’s extensive experience and deep commitment to our mission ensure that IFA will continue to thrive and advance our goals during this transition period. We are confident that under Keshav’s interim leadership, the organization will maintain its momentum and continue to serve our communities while we search for our next Executive Director.

Our search for the next Executive Director will centre on community and aims to recruit an Indigenous person who best aligns with the mission of the Indigenous Friends Association.
